The display makes no sound
Why it happens
Browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) don't let a page play sound until someone interacts with it: a tap, a click or a key press. It's a protection against websites that play sound on their own, and it affects both the chime and the voice.
While sound is blocked, the display shows the notice "Tap the screen to enable announcement sound" at the bottom.
- One tap, one click, or pressing OK on the TV remote is enough.
- The block comes back every time the page reloads or the device restarts.
Nobody is going to tap a waiting-room TV every morning. For unattended setups, configure the browser to allow sound from startup.
✅ First check
- The TV and mini-PC volume isn't muted.
- The speaker icon in the display header isn't set to "Alerts off" (crossed-out speaker).
- Audio goes out through the TV's HDMI, not another output of the mini-PC.
Chrome or Edge on a mini-PC (recommended)
Add the --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required option to the command that opens the display. With it, the display starts with sound and the notice doesn't appear.
Windows (shortcut in the Startup folder, see Display on dedicated PC):
"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --kiosk --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required "https://yourturn.space/?display=ID"
With Edge, the same option works with msedge.exe.
Raspberry Pi OS:
chromium-browser --kiosk --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required "https://yourturn.space/?display=ID"
Important: close every Chrome window before trying it. If Chrome is already open, the option is ignored.
IT-managed devices (Chrome policies)
If IT manages Chrome through policies, they can add https://yourturn.space to the AutoplayAllowlist policy.
Firefox
- Open the display in Firefox.
- Click the icon to the left of the address → Permissions → Autoplay → Allow Audio and Video.
Firefox remembers the permission for the site, including after restarts.
Smart TVs and Android sticks
The built-in browser of most TVs and sticks doesn't let you change this. Two options:
- Press OK on the remote (or tap the screen) every time the TV is turned on.
- Use a mini-PC with Chrome and the option above. It's the reliable way to get sound without intervention.
Testing the voice
In Displays → [display] → Edit, the speaker button next to "Voice language" plays a sample announcement. It plays on the computer you're configuring from, not on the TV: it's for choosing the language, voice and speed. If people in the room can't follow the number, lower that display's Voice speed and save: the TV uses it from the next announcement.
Galician and Basque voices
Browsers don't include Galician or Basque voices yet. On most devices (Mac, Windows, Android, TVs) the announcement will be read by a Spanish voice, which doesn't pronounce them properly. If that doesn't work for you, use the chime alert.
